They developed a portable, flexible alternative: An inexpensive, “instant” plastic board that weighs less than two pounds and adheres to any surface without screws. Wilk tells us that WhiteyPaint has since found an eager audience, leading to the fortunate problem of demand quickly outpacing supply. Struggling to finance demand on a bootstrapped budget, the founders reached out to Dallas Mavericks owner, Shark Tank investor, and HDNet Co-founder Mark Cuban. Seeing a billion-dollar market dominated by a few bloated players, Wilk said, Cuban believed WhiteyBoard was onto something.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) ? The Los Angeles Kings took the hard hits, some of them questionable, and kept rolling.

The way they’ve played so far in the playoffs, they saw no reason to get caught up in another team’s frustrations.

Discouraging Phoenix with their combination of skill and grit, the Kings took control of the Western Conference finals with another dominating performance, beating the Coyotes 4-0 Tuesday night to match an NHL record with their seventh straight road playoff victory.

Jeff Carter scored three goals, Jonathan Quick stopped 24 shots and Los Angeles will head back home with a commanding series lead after flummoxing the Coyotes in two games in the desert.

“We’re not here to worry about it (dirty play),” Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi said. “We came to get the game and we got it.”

Los Angeles got it by overwhelming the Coyotes just as it did in Game 1.

The Kings shook off the big hits ? a couple that led to game misconducts ? and continued a can’t-stop-us roll that started with a playoff push the last month of the regular season.

Dwight King scored his third goal in two games, Quick tied Felix Potvin’s team record with his third career playoff shutout, and Carter finished off the Kings’ first playoff hat trick since Wayne Gretzky in 1993 in the third period.

Los Angeles has won seven straight overall, tied an NHL record by opening the playoffs 7-0 on the road, and matched another record by winning nine straight road playoff games over two seasons.

The New York Islanders won a pair of Stanley Cup titles while winning nine straight road games from 1982-83, and the Kings are starting to look like a team that could go on a Cup run of its own.

Game 3 is Thursday night in Los Angeles.

“It’s a mindset; we get away, there’s no distractions,” Carter said. “For some reason, this team likes to play on the road.”

The Coyotes played better early and fell apart late, becoming frustrated after being unable to contain the more-skilled Kings.

Phoenix was hit with a string of penalties starting late in the second period, including a game misconduct to captain Shane Doan for boarding Kings center Trevor Lewis. Martin Hanzal also received one for boarding Dustin Brown in the third period and the Coyotes had 13 penalties for 56 minutes ? most coming after the final 5 minutes of the second period.

“I think the frustration level sets in,” Coyotes goalie Mike Smith said. “You’re in the penalty box that much against a team that’s in the conference finals, you’re going to pay.”

The Kings won the opener 4-2 by outplaying and outhustling the Coyotes. Knowing Phoenix’s makeup, the Kings figured to get more of a pushback in Game 2.

And the Coyotes were much more aggressive early, winning some of the individual battles they lost in Game 1 while creating some decent scoring chances.

Even with all of Phoenix’s hard work and a couple of line changes by coach Dave Tippett, the Kings still managed to score first. King got it, redirecting a shot by Drew Doughty that beat Smith stick side late in the period.

Hard work in the corners by Mike Richards set up Los Angeles’ second goal, by Carter. He muscled the puck past Smith’s glove side as he was going down on a feed from Dustin Penner, making it 2-0 early in the second period.

Then things completely unraveled for the Coyotes.

Doan, who was suspended three games for elbowing earlier in the season, was given a game misconduct and a five-minute boarding penalty for ramming Lewis from behind. Defenseman Keith Yandle was already in the penalty box and Daymond Langkow joined him after a slashing penalty, giving Los Angeles a two-man advantage for more than 2 minutes.

Brown was sent off for diving on a slash by Smith, but that didn’t bother the Kings. Carter scored his second a few seconds later on a redirect of a shot by Anze Kopitar, putting Los Angeles up 3-0.

With the Coyotes racking up penalties seemingly on every shift, Carter finished them off with his fifth career hat trick, punching in a rebound with the Kings on a two-man advantage after Hanzal’s hit on Brown.

“There’s no question there’s going to be frustration, especially when you get down in a game like that, guys try to finish their checks on the edge,” Coyotes forward Taylor Pyatt said. “We’ve got to try and find some positives and get things turned around in Game 3.”

Even if they do, it may not matter the way the Kings are playing.

Notes: The Kings were without D Colin Fraser, out of the lineup attending to a family matter. … Coyotes LW Ray Whitney played in his 100th career playoff game. D Michael Stone played his first with Adrian Aucoin still out of the lineup and David Schlemko still not fully healthy. … Rocker Alice Cooper, who lives in the Valley, attended the game. … The last team to win seven straight road playoff games in one season was Chicago in 2010.

Decades ago, astronauts brought back 850 pounds of rocks from their lunar journeys; the U.S. gave some away as “goodwill” gifts to the world’s nations. Over time, many of them disappeared, stolen or lost in the aftermath of political turmoil, and offered for millions on the black market. Gutheinz, first as a NASA investigator and then the leader of an intrepid group of students, has dedicated his life to getting them back. Author Joe Kloc tells a wild story of geopolitics, crime, science, and one man’s obsession to keep the moon out of the wrong hands.

An appetite for down-home cooking wasn’t what brought the former NASA investigator to the Pitt Grill recently. He was on a quest to identify and maybe recover some of the rarest treasure brought to Earth and then lost: moon rocks.

“We’re educating the states and countries of the world about how much they’re worth on the black market and we need to increase the security in museums and need to put them back on display,”?Gutheinz?said.

The rock samples were collected by the dozen American astronauts who walked on the lunar surface between 1969 and 1972. U.S. states, territories, the United Nations and foreign governments received them as gifts. The samples, which also were loaned to museums and given to scientists for research, range from dust particles to tiny pebbles.

“A lot of them are in storage. And we need to put them in an inventory control system. And that’s what’s really lacking,” said?Gutheinz, a Houston lawyer who also teaches college classes in investigative techniques.

At the Pitt Grill in Buffalo, Texas,?Gutheinz?was meeting a former toy manufacturer from Colombia who contends his piece of the moon is from the more than 48 pounds (22 kilograms) of material collected in 1969 by Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the first manned lunar landing mission.

Rafael Navarro’s asking price on eBay for dust scraped from his rock is $300,000. The dust weighs 0.03 grams, roughly the same as a grain of rice.

“Bottom line is, from a common sense perspective, this is a train wreck waiting to happen for him and he’s inviting it,”?Gutheinz?said. “He’s opening the jail cell door and walking through it. I wish him well but he’s really defying everybody by doing this.”

Navarro, 67, said he didn’t fear possible fallout from illegally possessing what could be federal government property or risking fraud charges for selling something as a moon rock when it may not be.

“NASA can’t prove they ever had this moon rock,” he said.

That part may be true.

The fact that something purporting to be a moon rock even shows up on eBay illustrates the greater problem of no one keeping proper track of the gifted and loaned rocks and the fate of many being unknown.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which keeps its collection of rocks at Johnson Space Center in Houston and a facility in New Mexico, has confirmed the lack of oversight and promised to tighten controls, concurring with a critical audit report last December from its own Office of Inspector General, whereGutheinz?worked as a senior agent. He left NASA in 2000 after 10 years.

“From time to time, I get a call from somebody that has a moon rock and his father or her father died and was a scientist,”?Gutheinz?said. “And they ask, ‘What do I do with it?’ I tell them, ‘Give it back to NASA.’ That’s a real problem.”

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Republican Mitt Romney said Tuesday President Barack Obama‘s support for increased federal debt has put the economy on a disastrous course, portraying himself in a speech in battleground Iowa as the defender of fiscal responsibility and his opponent as reckless.

Calling for sharp spending cuts and a long-term budget discipline, Romney is trying to frame the campaign against the Democrat as a contest of fairness versus irresponsibility.

“A prairie fire of debt is sweeping across Iowa and our nation and every day we fail to act we feed that fire with our own lack of resolve,” Romney said, according to excerpts of a speech he’s scheduled to deliver on his first trip to Iowa since January.

The White House promptly dismissed Romney’s critique. Press secretary Jay Carney blamed federal overspending primarily on Romney-backed tax cuts for the wealthy that were enacted during President George W. Bush‘s administration and on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Carney said Romney wants to repeat policies that led to high deficits and the recession and repeal Obama policies “that reversed the cataclysmic decline on our economy and that now has us growing for 11 straight quarters.”

Romney’s debt-and-spending argument is also the counter-argument to Obama’s emphasis on fairness, in which the president is asking more of wealthier Americans by eliminating tax breaks and loopholes.

It comes as Wall Street deals with the fallout of revelations that one of the nation’s most trusted banks made bad bets and lost billions of dollars, and in the wake of disappointing job growth for the month of April.

The speech also shows Romney’s effort to focus on the economy, voters’ No. 1 concern, after several days in which gay marriage dominated the campaign debate. Obama announced last Wednesday that he supports gay marriage, after publicly opposing it but saying his position was “evolving.”

Romney opposes gay marriage and reaffirmed his position while delivering a weekend graduation speech at a conservative Christian university in Virginia.

Romney’s speech in Des Moines also marked an effort to paint the wealthy, former private equity firm executive as a live-by-the-rules citizen, not a detached elitist, as the Obama campaign has sought to portray him.

An Obama campaign ad scheduled to run Wednesday in battleground states, including Iowa, casts Romney as a vicious corporate raider. The ad, told in the words of former employees of a failed Kansas City, Mo., steel mill, notes how Romney’s firm Bain Capital failed to restructure the company, and cut jobs and benefits.

The ad goes to the heart of Romney’s chief argument, that he is better adept by virtue of years of private sector business experience and as the former governor of Massachusetts to hone the federal government and encourage job creation.

“As president, I will approach debt and spending differently. My time spent building businesses and leading state government taught me that we need to hold every department and agency to a simple test: If something can be done better and more efficiently outside the federal government, then that’s where it belongs,” Romney says, according to the excerpts released by his campaign.

Romney countered that while at Bain Capital and as governor he helped create tens of thousands of public and private sector jobs. His campaign released a web video promoting his time at Bain.

Although Romney’s private-sector experience has been used against him before, Obama’s campaign is introducing the argument in battleground states before the Nov. 6 election. One of his rivals for the Republican nomination, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, characterized Romney as a corporate raider before the New Hampshire primary in January. Another rival, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, referred to Romney as a “vulture capitalist.”

Besides Iowa, Obama’s ad also was scheduled to air in Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. He won all five states in 2008 and all are viewed as competitive this year.

Romney’s Iowa stop also returns the political spotlight to this Midwestern state, where both campaigns see opportunity in their battle for the 270 electoral votes required to win the presidency.

Romney finished in a near-tie for first place in the state’s Jan. 3 caucuses. Obama won Iowa’s Democratic caucuses four years ago and carried the state in the general election.

Obama was more aggressive in visiting Iowa this spring as Romney campaigned for the GOP nomination.

Obama’s new ad marks his fifth this year. The campaign has spent more than $2.5 million on advertising in Iowa, which will yield only six electoral votes. Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and their wives have visited the state this year.

Romney’s focus on the general election came as he was still inching toward the Republican nomination, with voters heading to the polls in Oregon on Tuesday.

Romney has campaigned recently in Colorado, Ohio and Virginia, as well as in GOP-leaning Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma for fundraisers.

He was scheduled to travel to Florida, another key battleground, on Wednesday.

ScienceDaily (May 15, 2012) ? A strong laser beam can remove an electron from an atom — a process which takes place almost instantly. At the Vienna University of Technology, this phenomenon could now be studied with a time resolution of less than ten attoseconds (ten billionths of a billionth of a second). Scientists succeeded in watching an atom being ionized and a free electron being “born.” These measurements yield valuable information about the electrons in the atom, which up until now hasn’t been experimentally accessible, such as the time evolution of the electron’s quantum phase — the beat to which the quantum waves oscillate.

Wave-like Quantum Interference

In the experiment, short laser pulses are fired at atoms. Each laser pulse can be described as a light wave — the wave sweeps over the atom, and therefore, the electric field around the atom changes. The electric field rips an electron away from the atom — but the precise moment at which this happens cannot be defined. “The electron is not removed from the atom at one point in time during the interaction with the laser pulse. There is a superposition of several processes, as it is often the case in quantum mechanics,” says Markus Kitzler from the Photonics Institute at TU Vienna. One single electron leaves the atom at different points in time, and these processes combine, much like waves on a water surface, combining to a complex wave pattern.

“These quantum mechanical wave-interferences give us information about the initial quantum state of the electron during the ionization process,” says Professor Joachim Burgd?rfer (Institute for Theoretical Physics, TU Vienna), whose research team closely collaborated with the experimentalists at the Photonics Institute.

It’s All About the Phase

Like waves, quantum particles in this experiment can interfere constructively or destructively. The wave cycle of the electrons is extremely short, the quantum phase changes rapidly. “Usually, this quantum phase can hardly be measured,” says Markus Kitzler. Combining high precision measurements and elaborate theoretical calculations, information about the electron’s quantum phase can now be obtained.

An important tool for these measurements was a very special laser beam, containing two different wavelengths. The laser pulse interacting with the atom could be tailored very precisely. Using these pulses, the scientists could measure the quantum phase which the electron had inside the atom (with respect to the beat defined by the laser light) before it was removed by the laser. “This quantum phase that we can measure now, also tells us about the electron’s energy states inside the atom, and about the precise position at which the ionization took place,” says Markus Kitzler. To do that, the scientists had to measure the quantum phase with an incredible precision of less than ten attoseconds.

Ultrashort timescales — far away from everyday experience

The time span of ten attoseconds (10*10^(-18) seconds) is so short that any comparison to everyday timescales fails. The ratio of ten years to a second is 300 million to one. Dividing a second by the same factor takes us to the incredibly short time scale of three nanoseconds — in this period, light travels one meter. This is the time scale of microelectronics. Again dividing this tiny period of time by a factor of 300 million, we arrive at about ten attoseconds. This, is the timescale of atomic processes. It is the order of magnitude of an electron’s period orbiting the nucleus. In order to measure or to influence these processes, scientists have been striving to access these timescales for years.

Hi Folks,

A couple of weeks ago, on the 2nd of May to be precise, I had the opportunity to help run a cooking class with local chef and nutritionist, Mel Haynes. It was an exciting and nerve-wracking experience for me that has added another first to my constantly evolving CV. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be doing such a thing when I started this blog just twelve short months ago, with each new experience I gain new insights and ideas for the future.

The theme of the class was local, organic and vegetarian. We cooked a range of recipes from my own collection that showcased the best of what?s in season and? focused on dishes that were easy to re-create at home. We used ingredients from our freshly obtained Jupiter Creek Farm box and covered a range of courses from starters to dessert. I have included the recipes we used on the night for those playing along at home.

It was a lovely evening in which I learnt a lot, not just nutritionally but also about myself.

Things I learned as a result of the cooking class:

Cooking in your own home, with nobody watching is much easier than cooking in front of a crowd.

That sheep?s milk has just as much lactose as cows milk and is not an appropriate substitute for those with an intolerance.

Induction cooktops are the devil.

That it is important to explain everything you are doing, no matter how insignificant you think it might be.

Prepping ingredients beforehand is a must.

Checking the ingredient list once, twice, three times is also a must.

That I am a very messy cook (I already knew that one!).

Thanks so much to everyone for coming along (and thanks Mum for helping with the dishes!), I hope you all enjoyed yourself and learnt something new. If you?re interested in future classes with Mel make sure you head on over to her website and sign up for reminders. It?s a great opportunity to ask all those diet and nutrition questions you?ve been wondering about as well as learn some new recipes, eat great food and drink lovely local wine.

The recipes:

Rumor has it that the next iPhone will eschew Google's Maps backend in favor of Apple's own. Rene over at iMore, who has a good handle on how the minds in Cupertino operate, has a great overview of Apple's supposed current strategy that you really should read to try to make sense out of this one. The short version — Apple wants to shed Google's services. Not because users have a problem using them, but because they don't want Google to profit. Instead of offering an additional choice with their own version of a maps app, they are just going to replace what users know and love with something that generates less profit for Google. Smart business move, but a pretty foul dump on the users.

They're going to need some real magic to pull this one off. In the current version, Apple builds the UI and Google provides the mapping data. Google is really good at mapping stuff. The rumored version-in-waiting is supposed to add a 3D view, becoming the new killer feature for the next version of iOS. The problem is, users don't care about 3D map view (or anything 3D on their mobile devices) — they care about features, ease-of-use, and integration. Apple can certainly take care of the integration part, and even give it some of that good old fashioned Apple magic in the UI department. But that still isn't going to cut it. Google has the one big thing™ when it comes to maps and navigation — search data.

When you tap the button and tell your phone to find 1313 Mockingbird Lane, there's this unfathomably huge pool of data Google has at it's disposal to populate that map. Need to know where the closest Starbucks is? Ask Siri, or just look at the Google Maps app. Apple can't replicate this without years of its own data. Users will be left with an app with a pretty front-end, that's actually a step backwards in functionality. Apple will either have to offer a sub-par maps experience, or use Google anyway. And the first person who says Bing has to stay late and clean the chalkboard. That's two steps backwards.

Google creates the web services people want and use — even people with iPhones. This is a space where Apple is going to find it's difficult to compete, and fickle users may just look elsewhere. Of course, you'll find just as many bloggers telling tales of how great this is, and that Apple invented Maps. It's going to be interesting to watch this one play out.

What’s that? You’re hungry for more HP laptops? Good! Because we’re not nearly done yet! The company just expanded its line of Ultrabooks from two to five, and that’s not even counting this guy. And, the company also plans to sell so-called Sleekbooks — essentially, thin-and-light laptops that don’t quite meet Intel’s criteria for Ultrabooks. So what goodies to we have in store? First up, there’s the 13.3-inch Envy Spectre XT, whose all-metal body looks nothing like the glass-class clad Envy 14 Spectre we reviewed earlier this year. As with its big brother, the major selling point here is design — in this case, a 3.07-pound machine with a 14.5mm-thick profile. As for specs, you can expect an Ivy Bridge CPU, paired with a 128GB SSD and a battery rated for eight hours of runtime. Like the other Ultrabooks in HP’s stable, it has makes room for a USB 3.0 port, HDMI and an Ethernet jack, and similar to other Envys it comes with full copies of Adobe Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements, along with a two-year subscription to Norton Internet Security. We’re told the warranty on this Envy is one year, not two, but users owners do get a dedicated customer support line, for what that’s worth.

Moving on, HP’s Envy-branded Ultrabooks and “Sleekbooks” will be available in 14- and and 15.6-inch screen sizes in each category, though the Ultrabook configs are naturally Intel-based, while the Sleekbooks will pack Intel or AMD chips. With the Sleekbooks, too, you can also choose optional discrete graphics if there’s an Intel processor inside. (The AMD versions have “discrete-class” graphics, which is really just a nod to the all-inclusive design of AMD’s application processing units.) If you go for the Sleekbook, you’ll also get up to nine hours of battery life; with the Intel-based Ultrabooks, that rating is eight or nine hours, depending on whether you opt for the 14- or 15-inch version. Of course, the Intel-based models are also home to various Intel-branded technologies, including Rapid Start, Identity Protection, Smart Response and Smart Connect.

Dancing With the Stars standout Katherine Jenkins has joked that her outfits are being “sabotaged” on the 14th season of the ABC reality show.

The Welsh opera singer, 31, may have come in as one of the season’s least-known celebrities, but she’s changed that with powerhouse routines.

The occasional wardrobe malfunction doesn’t hurt, either … as long as it’s properly managed. Last night, Katherine rolled with it like a champ!

Her trousers were supposed to be removed during her three-person routine with Mark Ballas and Tristan MacManus last night, but one leg got stuck …

“It was a disaster. When the guys ripped my outfit off, it’s perfectly in half so I thought it had gone really smoothly,” Katherine told ET.

“And then I look down and … I don’t even know how it’s worked that half a trouser leg is still there. It doesn’t make any sense. We think it was sabotaged!”

The blonde songbirds admits she was left shaken by the incident. However, she did her best to remain composed on the dance floor.

The trio’s score of 29 was the highest score of the second round, and left Jenkins in a tie for third on the DWTS scoreboard overall.
